This is an extension of what we may already know – Fasica is just as important to work with as muscles. Millions have been made teaching specific techniques, tips and tricks concerning the myofascia, but many massage therapists have it in their “toolkit” and do not realize it. This class will help the participant engage their existing knowledge and build upon it to more effectively work in a myofascial model. This class targets the tailoring of a massage session based on the individual client, as well as practical techniques for the therapist to use for optimal muscular and fascial relaxation. Practical concerns of providing approaches for our clients to be given the opportunity to address their “flexion addicted” postures and into a more functional way of moving are provided. Special emphasis is also put on the current research and models of the myofascia, ways to examine the fascial environment, ways to fully engage myotatic units, and kinesiological principles of fascial movement.

Reciprocal Techniques (PNF, Resisted Stretching) is a huge topic. Using techniques and strategies utilizing the stretch (myotatic) reflex has been presented (consciously or inferred) throughout many massage and bodywork styles. This class is designed to capture, refresh and further develop this skill to produce a more effective and conscious result for Massage Therapists and their clients. Emphasis is placed on the kinesiological principles of reciprocal inhibition, but also on engaging reflexes, manipulating the benefits of using the reflex arc to maximize efficiency, and refining the skills that are already used. Remaining conscious of communication and language is also addressed in this opportunity to expand our reach in therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

Common Sense Body Mechanics 4ce's

Common Sense Body Mechanics $80  October 16, 2018  Tuesday 2pm-6pm

4 CE Instructor:  Xerlan Deery, LMT, BCTMB

This class invites the participant to examine a more massage therapist focused approach to logical and practical positioning when addressing a client in a massage session. Due to burnout and the “physical demands” of massage, many people drop out of the profession within 3 to 5 years, a sad fact, and with proper body mechanics, the physical reasons for abandoning massage therapy can be addressed. With the popularity of such techniques as deep tissue massage, and some forms that may require more physical focus on the part of the massage therapist, Common Sense Body Mechanics can help the participant rigorously examine the physics of their positioning, as well as learn better methods of utilizing their stance and physical approach while performing to provide a better experience – not only for themselves, but for their clients. Lecture, discussion and hands on.

My journey with Craniosacral therapy began in 1997 when I attended my first Craniosacral class at the Upledger’s Institute.

I realized then that this approach spoke to me like no other form of bodywork I have ever done. It was different from anything I expected and experienced until then.

After completing the basic training with the Upledger Institute, I was introduced and trained with Roger Gilchrist in the biodynamic approach (750 hours) which took me deeper into the fascinating work of the fluid body, trauma resolution, and the Primary Respiration. I began listening to the body in a new way, shifting tissues without employing any pressure. I became more and more familiar with the fluid language of the Primary Respiration.

I was also getting good results with challenging issues and realized that working that way was effective and precise clinically, emotionally and spiritually. I was fortunate to assist Roger Gilchrist in the Biodynamic basic training in New York City.

My own approach to the practice and teaching of Craniosacral therapy is, of course, a mixture of all of the various schools and teachers I worked with, plus many other years of training in other “mind” modalities including DreamWork, imagery for transformation, and Focusing.

As a teacher I choose to teach some aspects of biomechanics along with the more delicate work of the biodynamic.

I am a former teacher at the Swedish Institute for Massage Therapy in NYC, where I taught for nineteen years. Continued interest from students and faculty resulted in my forming continuing education classes on various topics in Craniosacral Integration.  MY classes have been taught in private institutions and massage schools in New York State.

My training and professional experiences in the last 30 years as a licensed massage therapist, a registered Biodyanamic Craniosacral therapist, a Transpersonal therapist, self realization coach, a Focusing advanced practitioner and an expert teacher and practitioner in transformational dream and imagery work, has deepen my work considerably and has kept me involved in many cross disciplinary ventures.

My passion is teaching. I have been a teacher at the Swedish Institute for Massage Therapy in NYC for 17 years, and am a certified teacher who works locally and internationally through the School of Images in NYC ( under the supervision of its founder Dr. Catherine Shainberg.

I have also developed many others cross disciplinary workshops in the field of immunology and health, a mind body approach to calm your stress and anxiety, and more.

I am currently in the process of developing a full program teaching Craniosacral Integration Therapy for the ones who are curious and interested in deepening their skills and knowledge in the field of Craniosacral but are not ready to invest huge amount of time and money in training.
