Common Sense Body Mechanics 4ce's

4 CE Instructor:  Xerlan Deery, LMT, BCTMB

This class invites the participant to examine a more massage therapist focused approach to logical and practical positioning when addressing a client in a massage session. Due to burnout and the “physical demands” of massage, many people drop out of the profession within 3 to 5 years, a sad fact, and with proper body mechanics, the physical reasons for abandoning massage therapy can be addressed. With the popularity of such techniques as deep tissue massage, and some forms that may require more physical focus on the part of the massage therapist, Common Sense Body Mechanics can help the participant rigorously examine the physics of their positioning, as well as learn better methods of utilizing their stance and physical approach while performing to provide a better experience – not only for themselves, but for their clients. Lecture, discussion and hands on.

Fascial Rewind 8 ce's

8 CE Instructor: Christopher Deery, LMT, BCTMB

This is an extension of what we may already know – Fasica is just as important to work with as muscles. Millions have been made teaching specific techniques, tips and tricks concerning the myofascia, but many massage therapists have it in their “toolkit” and do not realize it.

This class will help the participant engage their existing knowledge and build upon it to more effectively work in a myofascial model. This class targets the tailoring of a massage session based on the individual client, as well as practical techniques for the therapist to use for optimal muscular and fascial relaxation. Practical concerns of providing approaches for our clients to be given the opportunity to address their “flexion addicted” postures and into a more functional way of moving are provided. Special emphasis is also put on the current research and models of the myofascia, ways to examine the fascial environment, ways to fully engage myotatic units, and kinesiological principles of fascial movement.

The Healing Power of a Light Touch

Craniosacral Integration, a powerful hands-on approach that treats and supports the body’s wisdom and its innate ability to heal, is a wonderful tool to add to your existing massage practice.

Craniosacral Integration is an advanced form of bodywork that enables manual therapists to work deeply in the body while utilizing minimal pressure.

It gently addresses the spine, skull, sacrum, and fascia to treat pain and trauma as well as supports the body’s self healing process.

Craniosacral Therapy has been around for a long time but lately it has become an increasingly popular therapy due to its effectiveness and safety.

This workshop provides a thorough introduction to a powerful and unique light touch therapy.

You will learn:
  • The theoretical foundation of Craniosacral Integration
  • The lineage and development of the work
  • Engaging with all levels of the system: physical structures, rhythmic motions, energy
  • The core principle of “health”
  • Hands- on cranial and sacral holds to help your clients in deep relaxation
  • The concept of subtle hands-on palpation

  • The fundamental platform- types and conditions Craniosacral can help
  • The healing power of a light touch
  • Cultivating new self awareness and self growth
  • And more…

Are You?

A bodywork therapist who is curious about Craniosacral Therapy? You’ve heard great things about the results that people have experienced but you’re not ready to invest huge amounts of money or time in training until you know more about it.

Someone you love receives Craniosacral Therapy treatment, and the results have been amazing. You wish you knew more about it so that you could use some of the techniques to help your loved one at home between treatments.

A wellness or a healthcare practitioner who has taken a CST seminar, but it was ages ago, and you feel like you forgot most of what you learned. You don’t want to go back to take the class over, but you would love a refresher course.

BIO

My journey with Craniosacral therapy began in 1997 when I attended my first Craniosacral class at the Upledger’s Institute.

I realized then that this approach spoke to me like no other form of bodywork I have ever done. It was different from anything I expected and experienced until then.

After completing the basic training with the Upledger Institute, I was introduced and trained with Roger Gilchrist in the biodynamic approach (750 hours) which took me deeper into the fascinating work of the fluid body, trauma resolution, and the Primary Respiration. I began listening to the body in a new way, shifting tissues without employing any pressure. I became more and more familiar with the fluid language of the Primary Respiration.

I was also getting good results with challenging issues and realized that working that way was effective and precise clinically, emotionally and spiritually. I was fortunate to assist Roger Gilchrist in the Biodynamic basic training in New York City.

My own approach to the practice and teaching of Craniosacral therapy is, of course, a mixture of all of the various schools and teachers I worked with, plus many other years of training in other “mind” modalities including DreamWork, imagery for transformation, and Focusing.

As a teacher I choose to teach some aspects of biomechanics along with the more delicate work of the biodynamic.

I am a former teacher at the Swedish Institute for Massage Therapy in NYC, where I taught for nineteen years. Continued interest from students and faculty resulted in my forming continuing education classes on various topics in Craniosacral Integration.  MY classes have been taught in private institutions and massage schools in New York State.

My training and professional experiences in the last 30 years as a licensed massage therapist, a registered Biodyanamic Craniosacral therapist, a Transpersonal therapist, self realization coach, a Focusing advanced practitioner and an expert teacher and practitioner in transformational dream and imagery work, has deepen my work considerably and has kept me involved in many cross disciplinary ventures.

My passion is teaching. I have been a teacher at the Swedish Institute for Massage Therapy in NYC for 17 years, and am a certified teacher who works locally and internationally through the School of Images in NYC (www.schoolofimages.com) under the supervision of its founder Dr. Catherine Shainberg.

I have also developed many others cross disciplinary workshops in the field of immunology and health, a mind body approach to calm your stress and anxiety, and more.

I am currently in the process of developing a full program teaching Craniosacral Integration Therapy for the ones who are curious and interested in deepening their skills and knowledge in the field of Craniosacral but are not ready to invest huge amount of time and money in training.

lomi lomi basic - 16 ce's

Instructor: Paula Kaprocki, LMT
www.thebody-mechanics.com

A discussion of the history of Lomi Lomi massage in the Hawaiian Islands, including kahunas and introduction of the skills taught by Aunty Margaret Machado to non-indigenous people. A discuss of the Hawaiian philosophy of Ho’oponopono will also be introduced. Discuss, demonstration, and practice of the traditional Pololei style of massage practiced by Aunty Margaret will be taught. Pololei is the use of long, broad strokes with compression using forearms and elbows. A discussion and comparison of the compression, petrissage, and effleurage strokes normally used in Swedish Massage to the Lomi techniques will be done during the class.

Lomi Lomi is traditional Hawaiian massage that has been practiced by Hawaiian kahunas for centuries. The style of Lomi that will be taught is the Pololei style taught by Aunty Margaret Machado after she broke with the tradition of keeping the work secretive and began to teach this style to anyone.

In this class the student will be introduced to the basic protocol of a Lomi Lomi massage sessions. Use of forearms and elbows will be stressed and each student will receive one on one instruction from the instructor. The Pololei style of Lomi Lomi enables the therapist to massage the entire body with a minimal amount of hand work and no thumb work. The work is performed using forearm and elbow positions and body mechanics is a large part of the body leverage used to create the pressure required for this work.

lomi lomi - 16 ce's
This is a traditional massage technique from the islands of Hawaii.  Lomi lomi means “massage with caring hands”.  Lomi’s energy comes from movement to the client.  The movement transfer to the client in a spiritual connection much like a wave of the ocean or a tropical breeze, each movement feeding off the next.  The practitioner uses massage oil along with their forearms to create ironing, circling, sawing, and soothing massage motions.  Lomi Lomi is a must in a spa environment as well a a great addition to your personal therapeutic massage menu.
Students, please bring a large towel, four hand towels, and wear comfortable clothing.
Pre and Post-Surgical Massage 12 ce's

12 CE Instructor: Christopher Deery LMT, BCTMB

Working with the scope of practice of massage therapy, integrating care and treatments, as well as adapting our existing skill sets to better work within the medical paradigm is included in this class. Lecture, Hands On, and Discussion.

Reconsidering Reciprocal 8 ce's

Instructors: Xerlan Deery, LMT, BCTMB &/or Christopher Deery, LMT, BCTMB

Reciprocal Techniques (PNF, Resisted Stretching) is a huge topic. Using techniques and strategies utilizing the stretch (myotatic) reflex has been presented (consciously or inferred) throughout many massage and bodywork styles. This class is designed to capture, refresh and further develop this skill to produce a more effective and conscious result for Massage Therapists and their clients. Emphasis is placed on the kinesiological principles of reciprocal inhibition, but also on engaging reflexes, manipulating the benefits of using the reflex arc to maximize efficiency, and refining the skills that are already used. Remaining conscious of communication and language is also addressed in this opportunity to expand our reach in therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

Warm bamboo massage - 16 ce's

Instructor: Bradford Nicarry, LMT

Welcome to the “what’s next” in the massage world: Bamboo- being both easier to prepare and significantly faster to clean after the service than hot stones. Additionally, Bamboo retains and distributes heat differently.

It’s 8th grade science all over: HEAT expands!! The clients muscles, the therapists hands– both benefit from the warming quality of the Bamboo! You can incorporate Bamboo into your traditional modalities or create a separate service. The Bamboo can be safely used directly on the skin, or the client can feel the warmth through sheets and clothing. In this 16CE course we will cover: contraindications, care, cleaning, and maintenance. Expect to spend most of the time practicing on classmates.

working the hip rotators-6 ce's

Instructor: Bradford Nicarny, LMT

Help alleviate your clients lower back problems with some new techniques to get at that problematic piriformis muscle. This external hip rotator is hard to address. Learn to find and treat it while respecting your clients boundaries. We will also work the Internal hip rotators. So many jobs require long hour sitting, the ilio-psoas can get taught as well. Again, another often neglected area in massage.

Drawing from Thai, traditional massage, martial arts and yoga, we will learn techniques that can add variety to your bodywork sessions. We will cover the appropriate draping.

Whether you have athletically inclined patrons looking to reach their peak performance, or clients that are ill-at ease disrobing; this course has something for you!
